The Aging360 program, a collaboration between the Golden Buckeye Center for Dementia Caregiving and The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Office of Geriatrics and Gerontology, uses immersive, hands-on simulations to build empathy and improve care for older adults. One example is the “Dementia Experience,” where learners complete everyday tasks while navigating sensory and cognitive challenges using specialized glasses, gloves, and audio tools that mimic symptoms such as vision loss, neuropathy, and auditory overload. Paired with expert-led education, the simulation helps participants better understand the frustration, fatigue, and complexity of living with dementia while reinforcing strategies for compassionate, person-centered care.
This type of experiential training represents the broader range of simulation-based modules offered through Aging360, designed for students, clinicians, and community partners. A similar session is scheduled for OSU Neuropsychology Clinic staff at the end of August, continuing the program’s commitment to expanding empathy-driven learning across disciplines.
In addition to simulation training, the Golden Buckeye Center and the Office of Geriatrics and Gerontology provide a variety of resources to help carepartners recognize dementia-related concerns, support their loved ones, and connect with support groups and services available through The Ohio State University and across Ohio.
