The Aging Biomarkers Core (ABC) works closely with basic, clinical, population and translational researchers to create, manage and execute aging biomarker studies. We can assist with protocol and grant design, assay development, biomarker measurement and data interpretation.

Biological vs. Chronological Aging

Biological aging is a progressive decline in physical resilience associated with the accumulation of senescent cells throughout the body. In contrast to chronological age, which is simply the number of years an individual has lived, biological age is a modifiable factor.

Studies have shown that physical inactivity, stress, medications, chronic diseases and social determinants of health all influence biological age. Defining the determinants of biological aging and how they impact health is an expanding area of research.
